Special Thanksgiving Issue
Greetings!
In 1621, toward the end of the Plymouth colony's first year in America, the pilgrims celebrated their abundant first harvest with a Thanksgiving feast. The early settlers and the native Indians arranged a peace treaty and celebrated together. Everyone enjoyed a fabulous meal together. There is more in history that speaks of Thanksgiving Day, but one of the main aspects is that we remember to give thanks for our many blessings.
In this issue of the Parkway Sentinel, we extend a special thanks giving to all of our Blue Ridge Parkway VOLUNTEERS. The works performed by parkway volunteers are not to be compared with any dollar amount, because what you give to the parkway comes from your heart. FRIENDS of the Blue Ridge Parkway are truly grateful, and we speak for over 7,000 members who help to support the volunteer projects. In one way, this is a peace treaty with combined efforts to preserve, protect, and promote the Blue Ridge Parkway for our enjoyment and for future generations.

Parkway Trails Need You!
The National Park Service, with the help of FRIENDS of the Blue Ridge Parkway, are looking for more volunteers to adopt trails! Click here for a list of Blue Ridge Parkway trails that are not yet adopted.
The purposes behind recruiting groups to adopt Parkway Trails are the following:
a.. Adopt-A-Trail groups feel a responsibility for our natural resources and the satisfaction of preserving these resources.
b.. Adopt-A-Trail groups provide long term commitment - The group members may change from year to year in the group/club/organization, but the group retains the commitment to maintaining the trail.
c.. Adopt-A-Trail groups provide the needed Parkway support for maintenance and construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway trails.
d.. An Adopt-A-Trail group's Team Captain coordinates all paper work and group coordination working directly with the FRIENDS ADOPT-A-TRAIL Program Manager.
e.. ADOPT-A-TRAIL groups receive a sense of accomplishment and the satisfaction of making a difference for the Parkway by preserving a quality hiking experience for Parkway visitors!
** It is important to make an informed decision. FRIENDS require a 3 to 5 year commitment - therefore we encourage you to walk the trail you are interested in adopting before contacting FRIENDS. (top)
