      FRIENDS of the Blue Ridge Parkway is privileged to work with such dedicated individuals who take seriously the need to keep our Parkway trails beautiful to hike and safe to travel. We would love to share your stories and photos with other Adopt-A-Trail teams and perhaps also reach out to inspire others to be a part of the Adopt-A-Trail program. (more info by Linda Kassar)

      What's New on the Blue Ridge Parkway? -
      Just a little note from the Carolina Mountain Club: CMC membership has significantly grown and taken over more responsibilities during the past few years.They maintain over 400 miles of trail with more section maintainers and trail crews than ever before. They offer over 175 hikes per year, again more than ever before, and have accepted education and training as a new mission. The Carolina Mountain Club has been an inspiration and mentor for us at FRIENDS of the Blue Ridge Parkway in setting up our Adopt-A-Trail Program.

      Western Carolina Trail Day- May 21, 2005
      Reserve this Date For Outdoor Fun
      In recognition of National Trail Day we will extend the Mountain-to Sea Trail further into the Smoky's from Balsam Gap to Soco Gap! Your help is needed ! Won't you help? Bring a friend!
      Meeting Place--- Moose Café @ 9:00 AM (next to Farmer Market) or Ranger Station BRP and Rt 23/74 near Waynesville @ 9:30 AM - Return to Asheville about 4:00 PM
      Tools: If you have any digging tools, bring them. If not, will be supplied.
      Transportation---Car pools will be formed
      What to bring---Water, Lunch, Gloves, a great attitude
      What to wear---- Long Pants, Boots and bring rain gear

      Parkway Trail Works -
      Do any of these faces look familiar? If you have been to the Gully Creek Trail, you might have met Henry Fansler, Chris Halt, Carol Dimling and Susan MacLeod of the Foothills Group of the Sierra Club, or at least seen these volunteers helping to beautify the Trail.       Here is the latest News Release received from Phil Noblitt at the Blue Ridge Parkway Headquarters: Parkway Begins Spring Openings (Asheville, NC) Most of the Blue Ridge Parkway is now open for travel, and some campgrounds, picnic areas and concessionaire facilities will be opening this week. All will be in operation by mid to late May. *click here for more...

      Lessons Learned: Attention all Adopt-A-Trail volunteers! -
      This is where I need your help. All of your suggestions are great - so share them with me on what you would like to see in this eNewletter! Contact me, Linda Kassar, send me Lessons Learned about your adopted trail work or simply advice for other groups. In addition, remember to submit any of the following to share in our eNewsletter: photos, stories about your group, adventures along the trail, work dates for your A-A-T group and contact information to sign up, special places to hike for our next eNewsletter - which I hope to have by June.       Adopt-a-Trail Groups' Trail Dates -
      FRIENDS' Fisher's Peak Chapter trail work dates:
      * May 14, 8AM-1PM,   and  * May 21, 8AM-1PM, 
      * June 4, 8AM-1PM (Also National Trail Awareness Day, and the first music performance of the season at the Music Center.),
      * June 18, 8AM-1PM, and  * July 9, 8AM-1PM, * Aug. 6, 8AM-1PM,  and  * Aug. 20, 8AM-1PM
      *All dates are Saturdays, but if the weather is really bad, then we will reschedule for the next day (Sunday) in the afternoon.

      Volunteers bring a sack lunch, if you would like to eat together after the trail work. 

      Mountains-to-Sea Trail work dates:
      Doughton Park - Blue Ridge Parkway - NC-18 to NC-16 - North Ashe Task:
      * May 6-8,   * May 13-15,   * July 22-24

      Blue Ridge Parkway Workdays: 
      NC-18 to NC-16 - will take place on May 6-8, May 13-14 and July 22-24 with more dates added soon.

      Announcements
      May 14, 2005 - Dedication of a new section of the MST:from Devils Garden Overlook to NC-18, a total of 14.5 miles. Bring a picnic lunch and congratulate the volunteers that constructed this trail. RSVP by calling Allen de Hart at 919-496-4771 or adh4771 at aol.com

      Dedication of Fishers Peak Trail Phase I is July 16 at the Blue Ridge Music Center, more information to come.

      June 4th is American Hiking Society's National Trails Day, this year's theme is: "TAKE THE PATH TO A HEALTHIER YOU". Local event locations so far are at - Morganton, Pilot Mt., Greensboro, and Raleigh. See- ncmst.org (top)
